About that bling

A while back we posted a picture of a misguided abstinence promotion being posted on billboards around Iowa and asked "What were they thinking?" since the billboard apparently suggested that accepting a diamond ring should be a precursor to sex. Wandering about the Internet, I ran across this list of reasons not to accept a diamond ring. Note reason #4:

4. Diamond Miners are Disproportionately Exposed to HIV/AIDS Many diamond mining camps enforce all-male, no-family rules. Men contract HIV/AIDS from camp sex-workers, while women married to miners have no access to employment, no income outside of their husbands and no bargaining power for negotiating safe sex, and thus are at extremely high risk of contracting HIV.
